Dental Implants vs. Bridges: What’s the Best Choice for You?

Missing a tooth or two can have a bigger impact than most people realize. It’s not just about aesthetics — although we totally understand wanting your smile to look its best. Missing teeth can affect how you eat, how you speak, and even how your jawbone changes over time. At Renew Dental Loft here in Schaumburg, we see a lot of patients trying to decide between two main options to replace missing teeth: dental implants and dental bridges.

I'm Dr. Nicholas Hoepfner, but most of our patients call me Dr. Hoepfner. My team and I are passionate about helping you make informed decisions when it comes to your oral health. That’s why we want to walk you through the key differences between implants and bridges, the pros and cons of each, and what might work best for you depending on your unique situation.

What Are Dental Bridges?

Let’s start with bridges. A dental bridge is a restoration that literally "bridges" the gap left by a missing tooth. It typically uses the two teeth next to the empty space as anchors. These adjacent teeth are prepped down to support crowns, and a false tooth (called a pontic) is attached in the middle.

We often show patients a model of a three-tooth bridge to make this easier to visualize. Imagine three teeth in a row — the middle one is missing, and the two on either side are used to support a single restoration that spans across the gap. It’s a reliable option that has been used in dentistry for decades.

The main benefit of a bridge is that it doesn’t require surgery, and it can be done relatively quickly. But it does involve reshaping otherwise healthy teeth, which is something we try to avoid when possible.

What Are Dental Implants?

Now let’s talk about implants. A dental implant is a standalone solution. Instead of relying on neighboring teeth, we place a small titanium screw directly into your jawbone. That screw acts as a root, and once it’s had time to heal and fuse with the bone (a process called osseointegration), we place a crown on top that looks and functions just like a natural tooth.

If you saw the model we use in our office, you’d see the implant underneath the gums, securely anchored in the bone. It’s a beautiful option that doesn’t involve modifying other teeth and actually helps preserve the bone in that area.

At Renew Dental Loft, we typically recommend implants when the conditions are right — good bone density, no active infection, and a healthy foundation to build on. Because we’re placing something directly into the bone, it gives us the ability to preserve that area over time. That’s something bridges can’t really do.

Key Differences Between Implants and Bridges

1. Structural Support
Bridges rely on neighboring teeth to stay in place, while implants are anchored directly into your jawbone. If we have to cut into healthy teeth to place a bridge, that’s something we take seriously. We’re not big fans of altering healthy enamel unless we have no other choice.

2. Bone Preservation
One of the big advantages of implants is that they help prevent bone loss. When you lose a tooth and don’t replace the root, the bone in that area can start to resorb (or shrink). With an implant, we’re essentially tricking the bone into thinking the tooth is still there, which keeps it healthy and strong.

3. Longevity and Maintenance
Implants tend to last longer than bridges and require less maintenance in the long run. Bridges can be susceptible to decay at the margins, especially if the fit isn’t perfect or oral hygiene is a challenge.

4. Invasiveness
Implants do involve surgery, while bridges do not. But for many of our patients, the benefits of a long-term, minimally invasive solution (after healing) outweigh the initial procedure.

5. Healing Time
Bridges can often be completed in a few weeks. Implants, on the other hand, take time. We’re talking about a healing process that can range from four months to a year, depending on the condition of the bone and whether we’re dealing with an infection or bone grafting.

We like to compare implant healing to a broken bone. When you break your arm, the doctor puts it in a cast to keep it immobile. Bone healing takes time, and the same applies to dental implants. Once we place the implant, we let the bone heal and integrate before we add the final crown. It’s a slow process, but it’s worth it.

When Is a Bridge the Better Option?

Even though we usually prefer implants, we understand they’re not right for everyone. Sometimes the bone isn’t healthy enough. Other times, patients have medical conditions or lifestyle factors that make surgery more complicated.

In those cases, a bridge can be a great solution. It allows us to restore function and appearance without surgery. We’ll always be upfront about your options, and we never pressure our patients. Our job is to guide you, not push you.

Making You Comfortable Every Step of the Way

One of the things we pride ourselves on at Renew Dental Loft is making your experience as comfortable and anxiety-free as possible. We get it — dental visits can be intimidating. That’s why we’ve created a warm, welcoming environment where you can feel at ease.

We offer cozy amenities like warm neck pillows, blankets, and super friendly team members who are there to help you every step of the way. We even have what we like to call our "professional hand-holders"—our amazing assistants who specialize in keeping you calm and comfortable.

For patients who need a little extra support, we also offer multiple sedation options:

  • Oral sedatives like Valium
  • Nitrous oxide (a.k.a. laughing gas)
  • IV sedation with an oral surgeon for more complex or anxiety-inducing procedures

Our goal is to help you feel empowered, educated, and totally relaxed when you walk through our doors.

What the Implant Timeline Really Looks Like

Let’s be real for a second: one of the biggest downsides of implants is the timeline. It’s not an overnight fix. For some patients, the process can take nine months to a year.

Factors that affect the timeline include:

  • The condition of the existing tooth
  • Presence of infection
  • Quality and quantity of bone
  • Need for extra procedures like bone grafting

For patients with healthy bone and no complications, we might be able to complete everything in four to five months. But we’ll never rush the healing process. We want your implant to last a lifetime, and that means doing it right the first time.

Why Dental Implants Are the Gold Standard

When we say implants are the gold standard, it’s not just a trendy phrase. It’s the reality of modern dentistry. Here’s why:

  • They preserve bone and help maintain the natural shape of your face.
  • They don’t rely on other teeth, meaning fewer complications down the road.
  • They look, feel, and function like real teeth, which is what most patients want.
  • They last decades with proper care.

We’ve seen patients experience true transformation after getting implants. The confidence boost, the return of normal function, and the genuine joy of being able to smile freely again — it’s why we love what we do.

A Story We’ll Never Forget

One of my favorite implant stories happened about four years ago when I was practicing in Florida. I had a patient who only had four teeth left on his lower arch. He could barely eat, and his quality of life had taken a hit.

We placed four implants and restored his lower arch with a fixed option that gave him back full function. Shortly after that, I moved to Schaumburg to be with my wife. But this patient was so happy with the results that he tracked down my parents and wrote them a letter asking me to call him — he wanted me to come back and do his upper teeth too!

To this day, I still have that letter. It's one of those moments that remind me how powerful dentistry can be, not just physically but emotionally, too.
